Designing a Liquid Cooling Loop
for High-Performance Systems

Embedded systems are becoming more and more complex, processing and analyzing a growing number of sensors and signals. The result of this increased computing is often higher and more concentrated electronic heat loads. Because this excessive heat

CP_Custom_ValueSide1compromises the reliability of a system, air cooling is no longer adequate for some applications. Many engineers are turning to liquid cooling to remove the heat.  The complexities of designing a liquid cooling system can be intimidating for those unfamiliar with this set of technologies. Although selecting the thermal components for a liquid cooling loop is relatively straightforward, there are other considerations or nuances that can be overlooked. These include materials compatibility, corrosion prevention, condensation control, the position of the liquid cooling loop, use of standard versus custom parts, joints, fittings, connectors, and maintenance and service...Full Article

When a large amount of heat needs to be removed and chilled facility water is available, Lytron recommends a compact standard Liquid-to-Liquid Cooling System (LCS™). Our standard LCS has a high-efficiency counterflow heat exchanger, tight temperature control (±0.5°C), and cooling capacities up to 20 kW. Lytron’s engineering team can customize the LCS, as well as any of Lytron’s standard products, to meet a customer’s particular needs. Below is one example of what types of customizations can be made…

A large US-based manufacturer needed a rack mount LCS that could maintain a process water temperature of 25°C (± 5°C) on a critical section of its manufacturing line. The customer’s application required 2.5kW of cooling. Lytron’s standard LCSs are not available in a rack mount configuration, however, Lytron’s standard Ambient Cooling Systems (MCS™) are. So Lytron's engineers started with a standard MCS rack mount design and added LCS components that would best meet the customer’s needs. Lytron reduced the footprint of the standard LCS cooling system by utilizing smaller components that provided less cooling than the standard LCS, but provided more than enough cooling for the customer’s application. The engineering team also added a temperature control valve that was accessible through a removable panel, thus eliminating the need for a temperature display and some electronics. The customer received a custom cooling system that met its unique requirements!
