We design and manufacture custom cold plates, liquid-cooled chassis, plate-fin heat exchangers, and more for military, defense, and aerospace applications.
Since our establishment in 1958, we have delivered high-performance thermal management solutions to thousands of companies. During that time, we have developed a solid reputation as the Total Thermal Solutions™ company. Today, Lytron sets the standard for rapid product development, excellent program management, outstanding product performance, and unmatched product quality.
High Performance Cooling Solutions
Prime contractors such as Eaton Aerospace, General Dynamics, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Textron, United Defense, United Technologies, and others have turned to Lytron for their air and liquid cooling requirements. Our cold plates, liquid-cooled chassis, heat exchangers, and other components are used in a broad array of applications where size, weight, thermal efficiency, and structural integrity are critical factors.
Extensive Engineering Capabilities
Developing compact, lightweight-cooling components and systems requires engineering expertise and considerable resources. At Lytron, we continually invest in our engineering capabilities. Our development teams have extensive experience in heat transfer, fluid dynamics and material analysis. They utilize advanced simulation tools based on empirical data compiled during the design of thousands of high-performance products. We work closely with our customers to support their design effort, especially when schedules are tight, from proposal, development, qualification, and into LRIP. Our integrated project management tools ensure customers' schedule, cost, and performance objectives are met.
Broad Performance Qualification Capabilities
Once component designs have been developed, prototypes are produced and subjected to a battery of tests. Thermal performance is characterized in our laboratory on an array of systems:
- 2 wind tunnels
- 6 flow stations
- 3 data acquisition systems
- Refrigerant test stations
- Flow, temperature, and pressure instruments
In addition, ruggedness, corrosion resistance, vibration and shock, high/low temperature, salt/fog, and fire resistance testing are available.
Thermal Management Solutions for Military and Aircraft Requirements
Aluminum Vacuum-Brazed Cold Plates and Liquid-Cooled Chassis
In a world of compact system designs with increasing power densities, cold plates are the preferred cooling technology for high-power contact cooling applications. Lytron's aluminum vacuum-brazed cold plates and liquid-cooled chassis offer design flexibility, optimal performance, and superior quality. Forty years of manufacturing experience has demonstrated that our vacuum-brazed cold plates are consistently leak-free and reliable under the toughest conditions. Our state-of-the-art CNC machining centers ensure tight control of mechanical tolerances and guarantee dimensional accuracy. To reduce impurities that inhibit the brazing process, our cold plates are cleaned, assembled, and brazed in an environmentally controlled room. Additionally, we employ robust fixturing in our computer-controlled vacuum furnace to guarantee proper metal joining and product integrity.
Aluminum Heat Exchangers
Lytron offers two types of aluminum heat exchangers: flat tube and plate-fin. For most applications, our unique oil cooler flat tube heat exchanger construction maximizes heat transfer by using multiple extended-surface channels inside each cooling tube. These added channels increase the surface area in contact with the fluid for the highest possible heat transfer. When thermal performance must be maximized and weight and size minimized, our plate-fin heat exchanger technology is the ideal solution. Plate-fin heat exchangers are compatible with all combinations of gas, liquid, and two-phase fluids. The heat exchanger core is a fluxless vacuum-brazed unit to ensure absolute cleanliness and complete metallurgical bonding. This construction guarantees optimal thermal performance, maximum strength, and the highest reliability.
Tube-Fin Heat Exchangers
Lytron offers the broadest array of tube-fin heat exchanger technologies to meet the widest range of applications. Our inner fin design boosts capacity by increasing the liquid-side heat transfer surface. To improve the air-side capacity, we can also vary the fin density. As with all of our tube-fin designs, unit size is flexible and fitting configurations are manufactured to your specifications. Lytron's tube-fin heat exchangers are available in copper, stainless steel, aluminum, Hastelloy®, or nickel. We can also finish these units with coatings, platings, or Mil-Spec paint for harsh environments. And for ultra-clean applications, units can be custom cleaned.
Technology Solutions Focused On Quality
Lytron’s highest priority is producing cooling components of unmatched quality. ISO 9001 registered since 1996, all processes are fully documented. Ongoing training plus regular quality audits reinforce our product quality initiatives.
