Mechanical Designer

Position Summary:

Temporary opportunity to support Engineering Department by implementing sound design and drafting techniques in the areas of structural, mechanical, and electro-mechanical system design. Responsible for 3D modeling, detailing, and releasing engineering documentation as required. Exceptional computer knowledge in the areas of CAD, data management, and other business related applications. Must perform duties with minimal supervision. Must have good knowledge of military, industry, and regulatory standards and codes.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, model and detail parts and assemblies related to company product line. This includes machined parts, sheet metal parts, castings, hardware, and off the shelf items such as pumps, motors, valves, tubing, etc…
  • Create, release, and revise engineering models, drawings, and part lists.
  • Create, follow, and update Specifications and standards.
  • Complete engineering change notices (ECN's).
  • Support the Sales, Purchasing, Planning, Manufacturing, and Service departments.
  • Stay current with software revisions and new offerings, and industry trends and practices.
  • Review and check calculations, perform tolerance studies, assure manufacturability and part standardization in regards to design models, detail drawings, and design documentation.
  • Check design documentation for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality, and completeness.
  • Ensure design is cost effective to manufacture.
  • Must have the ability to handle aggressive project schedules. Project durations, typically measured in days, constitute the ability to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate own work as well as work of other, less experienced, designers and drafters.
  • Drawings must conform to ASME Y14.5-2009.
  • Overtime may be necessary depending on workload.
  • Job may require travel between customer and vendor locations.

Work Experience:

  • 5+ Years of mechanical design experience to include machined parts, sheet metal, weldments, and assemblies.
  • Knowledge of process requirements in regards to fabrication, welding, machining, and assembly of products.
  • Skilled in GD&T.
  • Familiar with ANSI/ASME standards.

Technical Skills and Abilities:

  • 5+ Years of SolidWorks experience including recent versions.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM software, preferably Enterprise PDM.
  • Optional experience with AutoCad, CADRA, Visio, and SmartDraw.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Access, Excel, and Word.
  • Ancillary experience in VB or C++ programming and MS Project.

Education Requirements:

  • 2 Year Mechanical Design Degree or equivalent, or
  • Associates Degree in Engineering or Science with Four Years Experience, or
  • Specialized courses in Drafting, Design, or Engineering with six years’ experience, or
  • Proportionate combination of education, training, and experience.
